Eczema? How to care for it naturally.

At BRYT, we are creating skincare products which care for sensitive skins is at the forefront of all of our product development.

What is eczema? it comes from the Greek word meaning ‘to boil’ and dermatitis meaning inflammation of the skin and these two words are often used to describe several types of skin conditions that cause the skin to be dry, itchy, red, inflamed and irritated.

Its important to know the difference between Eczema and Psoriasis

What is Psoriasis? it occurs when a person’s immune system triggers the skin cells to grow at at a faster rate than normal.  this results in a build up of dead cells on the skin instead of coming off.

Both these skin conditions can the skin to become red itchy, irritated but its important to note they need different treatments.

The most common type of Eczema can be referred to as atopic eczema or atopic dermatitis.  Eczema is a skins reaction to the environment, it is non-contagious, long-term inflammatory skin condition and very common.  If you have eczema your skin barrier function is weaken (this generally protects against waterless and protects the skin against irritants and allergens).  The result? the skin becomes very dry and more susceptible to infection from bacteria and viruses.

Seasonal changes can be a critical time for many eczema sufferers.  As the temperature fluctuation can have adverse effects on the skin. To prevent flareups you can incorporate various measures into your diet and skincare regime including natural products that are gentler and less aggressive on your skin.

Here are some lifestyle and natural skincare suggestions:

1. Try not to have your central heating on too high or for too long. Excessively overheating removes moisture from the air and makes skin dry and itchy. Keeping your living quarters dust free and having decent ventilation will also help.

2. Sweat can to cause eczema to flare up, so avoid wearing heavy, thick sweaters when you don’t need to during winter (for example if you get hot whilst walking), invest in some hi-tech sports clothing which will allow skin to breathe, and always try to shower straight after exercise.

3. Eat a diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods. Eating fatty fish containing Omega-3 fatty acids, (salmon, herring, mackerel) may help to reduce your symptoms. Probiotic foods are also known to help calm down flare-ups and support a strong immune system – yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, miso soup, sourdough bread.

4. Try to limit your intake of cow’s dairy, eggs, nuts, soy, and shellfish. Many eczema sufferers are also diagnosed with allergies to these foods, and while they aren’t the cause of eczema, these foods can cause flare-ups in sufferers.

5. Avoid sugar. This is one that we’d generally advise avoiding anyway, sugar spikes your insulin levels resulting in inflammation, which is bad news for eczema sufferers.

6. Moisturise. Replenishing your skin with the moisture it’s lost is key to keeping eczema under control. BRYT Skincare’s Night Moisturiser and Nourish Serum are wonderfully nourishing and contain ingredients specifically targeting eczema-prone skin.  BRYT Nourish Serum with Hyaluronic acid contains African Baobab Oil, Jojoba Oil and essential oils including Rosemary, Lavender and Jasmine which penetrate down to cell level, rebalancing the skin and helping it discover its natural equilibrium.  Our amazing therapeutic BRYT Night Cream is a cocooning night cream that nurtures skin whilst you are sleeping, and with Vitamin E, Shea Butter and African Marula Oil providing remarkable healing and moisturising properties much-needed for eczema sufferers.

What is my skin type?

Our skin is ever changing and evolving, which is why it is important to determine your skin type. We want to help you feel confident that you are investing in the correct skincare products for your skin type.

Remember, it is all about finding the skin’s natural equilibrium, which may change over the seasons and years. For example, you might have oily to combination skin during the winter months, but then need our serum for normal to sensitive skin during the summer months.

Bear in mind that diet and weather are key factors, as well as hormones. Our serums are produced in 30ml sizes which will last approximately three months, so you can either change after that period or continue with the same serum.

Analyse your skin

Normal skin is smooth and firm, with small or medium-sized pores. Neither too dry or too oily, it only suffers the occasional blemish.

Sensitive skin may burn easily, can react to certain cosmetics, and may become irritated due to weather and/or temperature changes. This is the case for many young people, especially if they suffer or have suffered from eczema or other related skin issues.

We recommend: BRYT Essential Serum

Oily skin on the face is visibly shiny and may feel slightly wet. The pores are often larger and the skin is prone to blemishes.

Combination skin features an oily section around the nose, chin and forehead and can be quite dry on the cheeks, while other areas seem normal. This is very common when we are going through hormonal changes.

We recommend: BRYT Calm Serum

DRY skin feels tight and in extreme cases can have noticeably flaky areas. It can look rough and bumpy and will rarely get oily.

Dehydrated skin looks dull and lifeless, feeling tight and drawn.

We recommend: BRYT Nourish Serum. This can be combined with BRYT Boost Serum for very tired and dehydrated skin.

All remaining BRYT Skincare products are suitable for all skin types. We all strive to achieve ‘normal’ status and with this regime we hope to help your skin reach this optimum balance. It is not a quick fix but a gradual process, however your skin will reap the benefits almost immediately, by feeling smooth, calm and refreshed.

|TOP Tip:  BRYT Calm and BRYT Nourish are also great to use as a therapeutic primer.  Use post moisturiser before applying make-up

Palm oil the facts and why BRYT says No to using it

At BRYT Skincare we are palm oil free in all our products.  We are doing our bit to support ethical sustainable projects, the environment, endangered wildlife including the orangutans and the indigenous people who live in these areas.

Palm Oil is a vegetable oil that is said to be in over 50% of the products for sale in your local supermarket shelf, cleansing products, candles, skincare, and cosmetics.  it is produced from the fruit of the Oil Palm (Ellis guineensis jacq.) This tree is found in Malaysia, Indonesia and West Africa in their tropical rainforest which are home to Orangutans, Elephants and Rhino’s.

These forests are being cleared to make way for Palm Oil plantations and the wild animals are being killed and made homeless.  These forest also include plants that are now also in danger of never been seen again.  The removal of the trees and forest leads to greenhouses gases being released, pollution fills the surrounding cities and local communities are now being displaced and human rights are being violated. An estimated 10 million species of plants, animals and insects are now endangered

“Global production of palm oil has doubled over the last decade. By 2000, palm oil was the most produced and traded vegetable oil (FAO 2002), accounting for 40% of all vegetable oils traded internationally. By 2006, the percentage had risen to 65%.

Worldwide demand for palm oil is expected to double again by 2050 to 240 million tonnes. New plantations are being developed and existing ones are being expanded in Indonesia, Malaysia and other Asian countries, as well as in Africa and Latin America.”

Is sustainable Palm Oil possible?

Yes! “The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was established in 2004 to promote the production and use of sustainable palm oil for people, the planet and prosperity. … Sustainable palm oil is defined by the eight principles and criteria against which oil palm plantations are certified. With the RSPO, WWF developed a set of international standards for responsible palm oil production. Producers that show they meet these criteria are able to sell certified sustainable palm oil. That means companies that use it in their lipstick, soap, margarine or whatever else can make the same guarantee to their customers.

Certified sustainable palm oil cannot be grown in place of primary forest or in important conservation areas. Growers have to use the best growing practices to keep soil and water supplies healthy, and to reduce pollution and carbon emissions. They also need to pay a decent wage and respect the rights of workers and communities.

The first certified sustainable palm oil came on to the market in September 2008. Today, about 6.4% of all palm oil is certified sustainable.

By looking out for CSPO, the label for sustainable palm oil, you’ll be able to buy these products safe in the knowledge that you’re not contributing to the destruction of the rainforests”.

Benefits Of Hyaluronic Acid For The Skin

Hyaluronic acid is a miracle ingredient, helping to give skin a more youthful, supple appearance. Found naturally in the body throughout its connective tissue, it is responsible for securing moisture and supports many areas of the body including the skin and joints.

While it is plentiful in youthful skin, as we get older our levels of hyaluronic acid drop. This can result in a loss of firmness and smoothness. Applied topically, hyaluronic acid is a wonderful anti-ageing ingredient helping improve the skin’s appearance.

Our BRYT Nourish Serum and award winning BRYT Boost Serum both contain hyaluronic acid to bring a multitude of benefits to the skin:

Boost & Nourish

  1. It locks in moisture

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant – meaning it that it helps draw water into the epidermis and prevents moisture loss. Hyaluronic acid can help retain a whopping 1000 times its weight in water within the cells of skin. When applied topically, it creates a protective barrier, locking in moisture and helping to give the skin a more youthful appearance.

  1. It reduces the appearance of wrinkles

Hyaluronic acid is known for its ant-ageing properties. As we get older, our skin loses the same ability to retain moisture as it does in youthful skin. Meaning that it loses firmness and suppleness. Hyaluronic acid’s ability to hold in water means that it helps plump the skin and smooth out wrinkles.

  1. It gets under your skin

Unlike other “wonder” ingredients, hyaluronic acid penetrates deep down into the skin’s dermis. Helping to boost its elasticity and hydration, and improving its look and feel.

  1. It’s gentle & calming

Having “acid” in its name may lead you to think that it’s a harsh or irritating ingredient. Unlike glycolic acid or other AHAs, hyaluronic acid is actually very gentle and can be used  on even the most sensitive of skins. Its calming, hydrating effects actually help reduce dryness, itching and burning of the skin.

  1. It’s backed up by science

Originally discovered in 1934 by German biochemist Karl Meyer, hyaluronic acid has been extensively researched. Scientific studies have shown that it improves skin hydration, increases skin smoothness, stimulates production of collagen, works as an antioxidant, and has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. That’s one hard-working miracle ingredient!

BRYT Skincare Boost Serum with Hyaluronic

  1. It’s smart

Hyaluronic acid is often described as a “smart nutrient” because it can regulate the amount of moisture that it retains based on the humidity. Ensuring that it absorbs the optimum level of moisture that the skin needs, and no more. Too much moisture would be damaging the skin’s surface by causing key substances to break down.

  1. It helps provide protection from the sun

UVB rays burn the superficial layers of your skin. This can cause irritation in the short term and sunspots and wrinkles in the longer term. Applying hyaluronic acid topically to the skin can help protect against these harmful rays.

  1. It has antioxidant properties

Hyaluronic acid is a potent antioxidant, providing defense against environmental damage and free radicals and signalling the skin cells to repair damage.

  1. It treats sunburn, sores & wounds

Due to its ability to keep damaged tissue moist and its natural calming properties, hyaluronic acid provides sunburn relief and is beneficial in treating sores and wounds.

  1.  Your skin can benefit from incorporating it into your diet too

Hyaluronic gained renown when a journalist visited Yuzuri Hara, a village in Japan. He wanted to find out why people in their 80s and 90s had wrinkle-free skin, flexible joints and high activity levels. It turned out that it was due to a diet rich in soya and tofu. Both of which contain molecules similar to oestrogen which send signals to the cells to produce more hyaluronic acid. So to get even more skin benefits from hyaluronic acid, try incorporating more of these foods into your diet – think yummy tofu stir fries & curries, miso soup, edamame beans, and soya milk on your cereal to try to up your intake!

Check out our BRYT Nourish Serum and our award-winning BRYT Boost Serum to discover some of this wonder ingredient’s skin benefits for yourself.
